Arakelyan Antoine Gurgenovich
Human rights activist.
Born in 1952, Armenian; journalist. Participated in the human rights movement, distributed samizdat. In the early 1980s, he spent several years in prison. He was engaged in public and human rights activities. Since 1995, he has traveled to the Chechen Republic several times (helping children, searching for missing journalists, hostages and prisoners, organizing negotiations between the St. Petersburg mayor's office and the leaders of Chechnya). From September to December 1997, he was forcibly detained in Chechnya, escaped. In 1999, he was vice-president of the Congress of National Associations of Russia, an expert at the St. Petersburg Humanitarian and Political Science Center "Strategy" and the Council under the Human Rights Commissioner of Russia. He died on 08/24/2024.
