The article, published in the Tomsk Herald on September 6, 1991, is devoted to the history of the formation of the multinational composition of the population of the Tomsk region in the 20th century. The author examines in detail the processes of forced resettlement of various peoples to Siberia, starting with the policy of the tsarist government and especially focusing on the actions of the Soviet government. Facts of mass deportations of the 1930s-1950s, confirmed by archival documents, are cited. The conditions of resettlement, the difficulties of adaptation of the deported peoples and the role of local authorities in these processes are highlighted. The article emphasizes the importance of access to historical archives for an objective study of this issue.
