Shchutsky Yulian Konstantinovich
Russian orientalist philologist, philosopher, translator; professor (1935). Candidate of linguistics (1935, unprotected), Doctor of philological sciences (1937)
Born in 1897 in Yekaterinburg. Graduated from Petrograd University in 1921 and worked at the Institute of Oriental Studies and the State Hermitage Museum. Lived in Leningrad, Dekabristov Street, Building 9, Apt. 2. He was acquainted with Voloshin and Blok and was close friends with Cherubina de Gabriac. He spoke many languages, including Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Sanskrit. On June 3, 1937, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on the Book of Changes. On August 2, 1937, he was arrested at his dacha in Pitkelovo on fabricated charges of the "anti-Soviet, anarcho-mystical, terrorist organization, the Order of the Knights Templar." Sentenced to capital punishment on February 18, 1938, by a visiting session of the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR under Articles 58-8 and 58-11. Shot in Leningrad on February 18, 1938. Rehabilitated on March 27, 1958 by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the USSR.
On March 22, 2015, a personal memorial sign was installed at house No. 9 on Dekabristov Street in memory of Yu.K. Shutsky as part of the "Last Address" project.
