Genus. in 1863 in Kronstadt in the family of a priest. In 1883 he graduated from the St. Petersburg Theological Seminary, in 1887 - the St. Petersburg Theological Academy. From 1904 - Bishop of Gdov, from 1909 - Bishop of Tambov and Shatsk. In 1913 he was elevated to the rank of archbishop. Since 1918 - Metropolitan of Tiflis and Baku. In 1919-1920 was imprisoned by decision of the Cheka. Since 1920 - Metropolitan of Kazan and Sviyazhsk. Arrested in Kazan on August 19, 1920, then transferred to Moscow, to the Tagansk prison. On August 27, 1920, he was sentenced to imprisonment for a term “until the end of the civil war.” Released on December 24, 1921. Arrested again in August 1922, he was in a Moscow prison, then deported to Ust-Sysolsk. Arrested in 1927. Sentenced by a special meeting at the OGPU Collegium on March 28, 1927 under Art. 58-6 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR to 3 years of exile in Siberia. Arrested on July 14, 1934, he was in the Butyrsky detention center in Moscow. On December 2, 1934, by decision of the Special Meeting of the NKVD of the USSR, he was exiled to Kazakhstan for three years. Arrested 07/07/1937. Sentenced to VMN by the troika of the NKVD of the South Kazakhstan region. 11/19/1937 under Art. 58-10. Shot on November 20, 1937. The burial place is in the city of Chimkent. Rehabilitated 05/07/1989.
