Genus. in 1856 in St. Petersburg in a noble family. In 1875 he graduated from the Corps of Pages, was in military service. In 1893 he was ordained a priest of the Moscow Synodal Office. Since 1905 - Bishop of Sukhumi, since 1906 - Bishop of Orel and Sevsky, since 1908 - Bishop of Chisinau and Khotinsky. In 1912 he was elevated to the rank of archbishop. Since 1914 - Archbishop of Tver and Kashinsky. In 1918 he was elevated to the rank of metropolitan, since 1928 - Metropolitan of Leningrad. Lived in the Moscow region, Ramensky district, st. Specific, Peschanaya st., 8. Arrested on 11/30/1937, was kept in the Taganka prison. Sentenced by a troika at the UNKVD in the Moscow region. 12/07/1937 to the VMN for "counter-revolutionary monarchist agitation" (Art. 58-10). Shot on 12/11/1937. Place of burial - Moscow, Butovo. Rehabilitated 11/10/1988.
