Shumovsky Teodor Adamovich
Orientalist, Doctor of Historical Sciences
Born in 1913 in Zhitomir; Polish. Graduate student at the Leningrad Institute of Literature and History, Arabist. Arrested on 11.02.1938. Sentenced by the Leningrad Military District on 07.09.1938 on charges of participating in the youth wing of the "Party of Progressives" to 8 years in a labor camp and 3 years of disenfranchisement. In December 1938 he was taken to Medvezhyegorsk, in January 1939 he was returned to Leningrad, the term upon review of the case was reduced to 5 years. In prison in Krasnoyarsk Krai. Released in June 1944. W orked at the Institute for Advanced Training of Teachers in Novgorod. In 1948 he defended his PhD dissertation. Lived in Borovichi. Arrested on 20.01.1949 . Sentenced on 27.04.1949 by a special meeting of the USSR MGB under Art. 58-10, part 1, 58-11 and 58-8 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR to 10 years in a labor camp. Imprisoned in Ozerlag, Irkutsk Region. Released on April 3, 1956. Returned to Leningrad in 1956. Rehabilitated by the decision of the judicial panel for criminal cases of the Supreme Court of the RSFSR on June 22, 1963. Member of the Memorial Society since 1994. Author of memoirs. Died in St. Petersburg on February 20, 2012.
