Baturin Alexander Borisovich
Definition: Artist, student of V.V. Sterligov
Years of life: 1914—2003
Reproduction methods:
Genus. in 1914 in Gelsinfors (Helsinki). In 1924-1930 lived and studied in Shadrinsk (Kurgan region), where his father was administratively exiled. In 1930 the family moved to Leningrad. In 1931 he became a student of the artist V.V. Sterligov (a student of K.S. Malevich). In 1932 he was admitted to the workers' department of fine arts at the Academy of Arts, but was soon expelled due to his noble origin. In 1934 V.V. Sterligov and his students were arrested. Baturin was kept in prison for eight months, and in 1935 he was exiled to Ufa. Arrested for the second time in Ufa on October 16, 1938, charged under Article 58-10 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR. At a special meeting of the NKVD of the USSR on October 16, 1938, he was sentenced to 8 years in a labor camp. He served time in Solikambumstroy and Usollag. Released on January 13, 1946, with a ban on residence in 36 cities. Lived in Oktyabrsk and Bugulma. Rehabilitated by the Supreme Court of the RSFSR on September 17, 1955. In 1956 he came to Leningrad and worked as an artist at the Graphic Art Combine. He wrote the memoirs “Three Sparks in the Dark” (published in the magazine “Zvezda”, No. 10, 1994). Baturin's paintings were exhibited at collective and personal exhibitions and acquired by Russian and foreign museums. In 1996, the Institute named after Alexander Baturin was opened in Paris to popularize and preserve his work.
