Genus. in 1929 in Vitvice, Dolinsky district, Ivano-Frankivsk region. Deported with his parents to Kazakhstan in 1947. Arrested in 1949, sentenced by OSO under the NKVD of the USSR in March 1949 to 5 years in prison and life exile. Released in 1953, exiled to Karaganda, to his family. During an accident at the mine, he was seriously injured and eventually received permission to return to Ukraine. In 1957-1962. studied at the philological faculty of Lviv University. 1964 - one of the co-founders of the underground Ukrainian National Front, co-author of its policy documents "UNS Tactics", editor of the "Will and Motherland" magazine. In 1967, together with other members of the UNS, he was arrested on March 24, 1967, convicted by the Supreme Court of the Ukrainian SSR under Art. 56, 64 of the Criminal Code of the Ukrainian SSR to 12 years of penal colony and 5 years of exile. For writing letters of protest and participating in a hunger strike in 1972, he was serving a sentence in psychiatric hospitals. After his release in 1978, he again became actively involved in the Ukrainian human rights movement. In 1979 he became one of the co-founders of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Group. In March 1980 he was arrested for the third time. Released in 1985, he took part in the creation of new socio-political movements and political parties in Ukraine.
