Arrested on December 11, 1988 in Yekaterinburg (Sverdlovsk) for participating in a rally dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights. Accused of insulting officials of the Sverdlovsk KGB and the party apparatus. He spent more than a year in prison, was twice sent for a psychiatric examination, and was not provided with medical care. Thanks to the intervention of the international community and public organizations within the country, he was released on July 29, 1989. under recognizance not to leave. Subsequently, the case was dismissed by the panel of the Sverdlovsk Regional Court for lack of evidence of a crime.
