In 1980 he left for the USA, worked in Washington under the cover of the third secretary of the embassy. Recruited by the FBI, passed secret materials on the composition of the residency and agents of Soviet intelligence in the United States. Recalled to Moscow in 1984. In the middle of 1985 he was arrested. The Military Collegium of the Supreme Court sentenced him to death.
