Born in 1949 in Chelyabinsk. In 1966 he graduated from high school in Minsk, in 1975 - from the Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute named after V.I. Ulyanov (Lenin). He received a diploma in radio design engineering. He served in the Soviet Army. He worked as an engineer in Leningrad. He became interested in history and philosophy. He wrote the book "The Faded Dawn", met with foreign correspondents, American and French publishers. Arrested on September 3, 1981. He was charged under Article 70 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR. According to the verdict of the Leningrad City Court of November 27, 1981, he was sentenced to 4 years of imprisonment in a strict regime colony and 2 years of exile. He was held in VS-389/37 and VS-389/35. He served his sentence of exile in the village of Ayan (Khabarovsk Krai) from September 1985 to August 1987. In 1987, he returned to Leningrad. Unsuccessfully tried to obtain a residence permit in Leningrad. Illegally sent manuscripts to London. In 1988, he left for London at the invitation of Amnesty International. He moved to the United States, where he received political asylum. He worked at Yale University in his main specialty. He published short stories, journalistic articles, books, and film scripts. He was rehabilitated on April 27, 1992. In 1998, he returned to Russia, and his Russian citizenship was restored. He lives "in two countries". On March 14, 2025, the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation included him in the register of "foreign agents".
