Genus. in 1938. Graduated from the choreographic studio at the Ufa Opera and Ballet Theater. In 1955 he entered the Leningrad Choreographic School. After graduating in 1958, he became a soloist in the ballet of the S. M. Kirov Theater (modern Mariinsky Theater). On June 16, 1961, while on tour in Paris, he refused to return to the USSR. Worked at the Royal Ballet in London. Received Austrian citizenship. For more than fifteen years he was a star of the London Royal Ballet. He has performed all over the world (Europe, USA, Japan, Australia). From 1983 to 1989 was the director of the ballet troupe of the Paris Grand Opera. In the last years of his life he acted as a conductor. Died of AIDS on 01/06/1993 near Paris. He was buried in the Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois cemetery near Paris.
