American pilot who flew reconnaissance missions for the CIA. The U-2 spy plane he piloted was shot down during a flight near Sverdlovsk on 05/01/1960. Sentenced on August 19, 1960. by the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR under Article 2 “On criminal liability for state crimes” to 10 years in prison, with the first three years to be served in prison. In February 1962, he was exchanged for the Soviet intelligence officer Rudolf Abel, exposed in the USA.
