Genus. in 1928 in the village. Krivasalis, Shvenchensky district, Lithuania, Lithuanian. Being a student of a gymnasium in the town of Linkmenis, he was detained in July 1945, accused of belonging to the underground organization "Geležinis vilkas" ("Iron Wolf"). During the investigation, he was beaten and intimidated; released after 2 months. Since 1946 in Vilnius. He graduated from school in 1948. In 1949 he joined the Komsomol. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics of Vilnius University in 1954. He worked in the Lithuanian branch of the State Bank of the USSR. In 1956 he entered graduate school. Participated in the movement to organize Lithuanian schools for Lithuanian peasants living in Belarus and Poland. Arrested at the end of 1957, he was involved in the case of the underground organization "National Front". Sentenced under Art. 58-10 part 1, 58-11 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR for 4 years of labor camp. Imprisoned in Ozerlag (Irkutsk region). Released at the end of 1960, returned to Vilnius. He worked at the plant "Puntukas" as a dispatcher, then as an economist. An active figure in the anti-Soviet resistance and human rights movement. Arrested 05/24/1973. Sentenced on a trumped-up charge on December 19-26, 1973 by the People's Court of the Leninsky District of Vilnius under Art. 94 part 2, 182 of the Criminal Code of the Lithuanian SSR ("abuse of official position") to 1 year in prison. Imprisoned in a criminal camp in Vilnius. After his release and until the next arrest, he worked as a firefighter, then as a loader at the Lithuanian film studio. In 1976-1977, together with J. Sasnauskas, K. Jokubinas and others, he published the underground magazine "Laisvės Šauklys" ("Herald of Freedom"), then the magazine "Vytis" ("Pursuit"). In June 1978, together with V. Shakalis and others, he founded and headed the underground Lithuanian Freedom League. Arrested for the third time on 10/30/1979. Sentenced 09/19/1980 under Art. 68 part 1 of the Criminal Code of the Lithuanian SSR (analogue of article 70 part 1 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR) to 3 years of a strict regime labor camp and 5 years of exile. Imprisoned in Perm political camps. Participated in camp resistance actions. In exile in the Magadan region (1982-1986). Released in 1986 (pardoned without application), returned to Lithuania. He continued his advocacy work. He was awarded the Order of the Chase Cross, III degree (1998). In 1999, a two-volume collection of his works was published in Vilnius. In 2010, he worked at the Center for the Study of Genocide and Resistance (Vilnius). He died on February 16, 2023, and was buried in Vilnius at the Rokantiškės cemetery.
