Arrested in July 1973 in Dnepropetrovsk for anonymous letters to newspapers about the lack of kindergartens with the Ukrainian language and the lack of Ukrainian schools. Convicted in December 1973 Dnepropetrovsk Regional Court under Article 187-1 of the Criminal Code of the Ukrainian SSR (analogous to 190-1 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR) for 2.5 years of the penal colony. He was kept in camp YaE 308/26 in Zheltye Vody since February 1974. to 1976 After his release in 1976. returned to Dnepropetrovsk.
