Alexander Zaozersky was born on March 21, 1874 in the village of Apukhtino, Tver province (according to other sources, in the village of Leontievskoye, Uglich district, Yaroslavl province) in the family of a priest. He graduated from the Bethany Theological Seminary, and in 1898 - the Moscow Theological Academy with the title of undergraduate, after which he taught at the Arkhangelsk and Oryol Theological Seminaries. In 1910 he graduated from the historical and philological faculty of St. Petersburg University, and was left at the university. His teacher was S. F. Platonov.
He taught at the Bestuzhev Courses, at the Psychoneurological Institute, at the women's gymnasium L. S. Tagantseva, at the Higher Courses of Lesgaft, at the Pedagogical Institute. N. A. Nekrasova. From September 1915 he was Privatdozent of St. Petersburg University, from 02.11.1918 he was a professor. 04/30/1917 he defended his master's thesis "Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich in his household."
On 06/01/1924 he was appointed to the position of senior librarian, scientific specialist of the 2nd category of the Manuscript Department of the Library of the Academy of Sciences. Since 1924 - editor of the historical collection "Veka". From 10/01/1925 - as a scientific curator. In 1929 he was arrested in the case of the religious and philosophical circle "Resurrection", then in the "Academic case". Sentenced to exile to Solovki, which was later replaced by Alma-Ata. In the mid-1930s, he returned from exile and continued to study science. Collaborated with the USSR Academy of Sciences and the State Literary Museum. He was engaged in the study of archival documents of the Petrine era.
He died on 10/01/1941 in the village of Leontievskoye, Bolsheselsky district, Yaroslavl region.
