Genus. in 1872 in the family of a priest of the Oryol diocese. Graduated from the Oryol Theological Seminary. In 1893-1897 Studied at the Kyiv Theological Academy. Bishop of Kineshma, vicar of the Kostroma diocese (1905 - 1908), Bishop of Narva, vicar of the St. Petersburg diocese (1908-1914), Bishop of Vyatka and Slobodskaya (1914 - 1921), 3rd Archbishop of Krutitsky, vicar of the Moscow diocese (1922 - 1923) , Metropolitan of Odessa (1925 – 1927), Metropolitan of Tashkent and Turkestan (1927 – 1933).On 11/01/1918 he was arrested in Moscow and imprisoned in Butyrka prison without charge. On April 7, 1919, he was elevated to the rank of archbishop. On April 23, 1919, he was sentenced to 3 years in a concentration camp and sent to the Arkhangelsk camp. 09/09/1920 was released early from the concentration camp. Returned to Moscow. On 10/20/1920 he was arrested at his Moscow apartment, imprisoned first in the prison subdivision of the MChK (Kiselny lane, 8, cell 9), then in Butyrskaya prison. In July 1921 he was released on his own recognizance not to leave Moscow. March 22, 1922 - arrested and imprisoned in Butyrka prison in connection with the case of “confiscation of church valuables.” January 23, 1923 - released on his own recognizance not to leave Moscow. 03/20/1923 arrested, brought to trial together with the Patriarch, Metropolitan Arseny (Stadnitsky), secretary of the Patriarch Peter Guryev. On March 28, 1924 he was sentenced to 3 years of exile in Central Asia. Exiled to Chimbay (Karakalpakstan), then to Khiva. Released in 1925.
