Born in 1891 in St. Petersburg. Graduated from the Law Faculty of Petrograd University in 1914. Began publishing in 1911 in the Chisinau newspaper Bessarabskaya Zhizn. After 1917, he was in charge of extracurricular education in Vitebsk, taught at the Pedagogical Institute, and was rector of the Proletarian University. In 1922, he moved to Petrograd. He worked in the extracurricular museum, in the literary and artistic department of the State Publishing House (GIHL), in 1922-1924 he edited the weekly Zapiski Peredvizhny Teatra P. P. Gaideburov and N. F. Skarskaya, taught courses in Russian, Soviet, and foreign literature at the A. I. Herzen Pedagogical Institute, the Leningrad Historical and Linguistic Institute, and the Tolmachev Military-Political Academy. He was the author of one of the first courses in the history of Soviet literature. Since 1935 - professor at Leningrad State University. Author of many articles and essays on Soviet literature, works on the methodology of literature, and the psychology of creativity. He published the literary legacy of A. Blok; under his editorship, the first editions of the poet's "Diary" (1928) and "Notebooks" (1930) were published. He was arrested on the night of 12.02.1938 as a "member of an anti-Soviet organization". By the resolution of the Special Troika of the NKVD Directorate for the Leningrad Region dated 08.06.1938, he was sentenced to capital punishment, with confiscation of property. He was shot on 18.06.1938. Rehabilitated by the Leningrad City Court on 05.11.1956. On 22.11.2015, in memory of P.N. Medvedev, a personal memorial sign was installed on house No. 9 on the Griboyedov Canal Embankment as part of the "Last Address" project.
