Definition: Soviet physical chemist, one of the founders of chemical physics. Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1932; corresponding member since 1929), the only Soviet winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry (received in 1956 together with Cyril Hinshelwood).
