Genus. in 1919 in Irkutsk in the family of a gold miner. In 1929 the family was dispossessed. He worked with his father in a factory. In 1933–1936 studied at the Sverdlovsk Power Engineering College, in 1936–1941. - in Leningrad at the Higher Naval School. Frunze (where he was sent by decision of the regional committee of the Komsomol after the third year of the energy technical school). He received the specialty of electromechanics.In May 1941, he was sent as the commander of an anti-aircraft battery on the squadron destroyer "Stroyny". In October 1941 he was arrested on the denunciation of a colleague. Accused of listening to foreign radio stations. Sentenced to 5 years in labor camp (art. 58-10).
From 10/16/1941 to February 1942, he was in the Kresty prison, worked on cleaning up the corpses of prisoners, then served time at a factory for the repair of military equipment.
In early 1943, a representative of the command arrived at the plant and turned to the prisoners with a proposal to atone for their guilt before their homeland with blood: to participate in a penal unit during an operation to break the blockade (after successfully completing the task, the return of military rank and the honorable name of a Soviet citizen).
Since 03/19/1943, he participated in the operation among 73 officers (from lieutenant to colonel) of the penal battalion. The attackers were killed instantly. Only two, one of whom was D. Shchapov, managed to reach the enemy trenches. He was wounded, lost consciousness, ended up in a German hospital. Transferred to Tallinn to a sabotage and reconnaissance school, then to Berlin. He was trained to participate in the operation to invade Leningrad. Appointed senior sabotage group.
On 10/13/1943, thanks to the efforts of D. Shchapov and two other members of the naval sabotage group, the German operation failed.
Arrested by the NKVD. The investigation was conducted with the use of torture. The investigation was supervised by General Lebedev, one of the interrogations was personally conducted by the head of the SMERSH department, V. Abakumov.
In 1944 he was sentenced to 15 years in labor camp. He served time in Vorkuta. He worked at the construction of the Vorkuta Mechanical Plant as a foreman of installation works and chief mechanic, assistant chief engineer and mechanic at mines No. 40 and No. 30.
In 1956 he was released, rehabilitated, awarded the "Badge of Mining Glory".
In 1957 he entered the Leningrad Mining Institute and received a second higher education in absentia.
At the end of 1969, he became the head of the Logistics Department of the Vorkutaugol plant. In 1974 he was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor.
In 1974 he was arrested on charges of stealing imported equipment. Sentenced to 11 years in camps. Released from prison near Ukhta a year later. Moved to permanent residence in Leningrad.
Since January 1990, he began to write memoirs, led the St. Petersburg Association of Victims of Unjustified Repressions.
