Born in 1854 in Moscow; higher education - graduated from the 2nd Moscow Gymnasium (1873) and the Physics and Mathematics Department of Moscow University (1877). From 1900 - adjunct, from 1906 - full academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Director of the Pulkovo Observatory from 1916 until the end of June 1919. On 30.07.1919, he was searched at the Pulkovo Observatory, on 31.07.1919 he was arrested "for counter-revolutionary activity". Until 05.08.1919 he was in the pre-trial detention center in Detskoye Selo. He was arrested again on the night of 20.09.1919.
