Galanskov Yury Timofeevich

Genus. in 1939 in a family of Moscow workers. Entered the history department of Moscow State University, expelled for independence of judgment. Worked at the Literary Museum. He continued his education at the evening department of the Institute of History and Archives. One of the active participants in free literary readings at the Mayakovsky monument, where his poem “The Human Manifesto” was first performed. In 1961 he took part in the creation of the poetry collection "Phoenix" (one of the first publications of samizdat). He tried to create a pacifist organization in the USSR, drafted the program and charter of the World Union of Supporters of General Disarmament. One of the organizers of the "glasnost rally" on Pushkin Square in Moscow 12/05/1965. For his participation in this rally he was briefly arrested. In the summer of 1966, he organized the Moscow opposition youth, through whose efforts, despite the opposition of the suppressive authorities, on December 5, 1966 on the square. Pushkin, a new meeting of public disagreement with the unconstitutional policies of the authorities was held. At the same time, he compiled a collection of socio-political and literary materials “Phoenix-66” (the prototype of all subsequent samizdat publications), and his friend A.I. Ginzburg - "White paper on the case of Sinyavsky and Daniel." In 1966, he became close to the NTS (International Organization "People's Labor Union") and became its member. 01/19/1967 was arrested, after a year of being under investigation in Lefortovo prison, he (together with A.I. Ginzburg, V.I. Lashkova and A.I. Dobrovolsky) appeared in court. Despite a serious illness (duodenal ulcer), he was sentenced to 7 years in maximum security camps. In the Mordovian camp he took part in protest hunger strikes, fought against the abuses of the camp administration, and defended the rights of other political prisoners. Despite the difficult conditions and deteriorating health, he categorically refused to submit a request for pardon. Operated on 10/18/1972 in the camp hospital (Barashevo village). Died 11/04/1972.
