Genus. in 1933 in Karelia, Karelian. He graduated from Petrozavodsk University (Department of Finnish Philology) in 1957. On June 14, 1959 he crossed the Soviet-Finnish border together with the Finn Vilho Forsel and appealed to the Finnish authorities with a request to provide asylum or the opportunity to travel to another country. The security police came to the conclusion that the defectors are political refugees and have the right to asylum in Finland. By the decision of President Urho Kekkonen, who did not want to overshadow the upcoming visit of N.S. with this story. Khrushchev, July 20, 1959, the fugitives were extradited. In the USSR, accused of treason and anti-Soviet agitation, sentenced under Art. 58-1a to 10 years in maximum security camps. He was kept in Mordovian camps. In 1963, with a group of prisoners, he escaped from prison through a dug underground passage. For participation in organizing the escape, a sentence of 3 years was added with detention in the Vladimir prison. Released in 1972. Lived in Petrozavodsk. He died in 1987 from leukemia.
