Until 1949 he studied at the Faculty of History of Moscow State University. He began publishing in 1945. In 1949 he was repressed. Released in 1954. From 1991 to 1995 - Secretary of the Moscow Writers' Union. In 1993 he signed the “Letter of the Forty-Two”. In 2001, he headed the jury of the Booker Prize.
