Yuri Zharkikh was born in 1938 in the city of Tikhoretsk, Krasnodar Territory. He graduated from the Mukhinsky Higher Art and Industrial School in 1967. In the 70s he was one of the leaders of unofficial art in Leningrad and Moscow. He organized the first exhibitions of underground artists in Leningrad at the Palace of Culture named after. I.I. Gaza and the Nevsky Palace of Culture, participated in the famous Bulldozer exhibition in Moscow.
The Association of Experimental Exhibitions, which united nonconformist artists, was created at the end of 1975 on the initiative of Yuri Zharkikh and Evgeniy Rukhin. Due to persecution by the authorities*, he was forced to emigrate to Germany and then to France, where he has lived and worked for more than 30 years. In 2004, Yuri Zharkikh was returned to Russian citizenship.
