Kalitaev Vyacheslav Semenovich
Captain of the steamship "Kazakhstan"
Born in 1899 in the settlement of Beta, Novorossiysk Okrug, Azov-Black Sea Territory; higher education - graduated from the nautical school in Rostov-on-Don. From 1925 in the Baltic Shipping Company. Lived in Leningrad, Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt, 44b, apt. 3. From 1939 - captain of the steamship "Kazakhstan" (transport No. 523), which participated in the so-called "Tallinn transition" - the evacuation of the main forces of the Baltic Fleet from Tallinn to Kronstadt in late August 1941. During the transition, the ship was repeatedly subjected to air raids. During one of the raids, the captain was thrown overboard by a blast wave and picked up by submarine sailors. According to the forensic medical examination, Kalitayev was shell-shocked and was unconscious at the time of the disaster. By order of I. Stalin № 303" from 12.09.1941 " On the actions in battle of the crew of the steamship "Kazakhstan"" and was arrested on 25.09.1941 in Tallinn. Together with other crew members "for unauthorized abandonment of the ship, which was in combat emergency conditions" was sentenced on 29.09.1941 by the Military Tribunal of the Leningrad Naval Garrison to capital punishment with confiscation of property. Shot on 02.10.1941. Rehabilitated by the Leningrad Military District on 07.08.1961.
On July 2, 2017, a personal memorial sign was installed on house No. 44b on Kamennoostrovsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg in memory of V.S. Kalitaev as part of the Last Address project.
