Genus. in 1942 in Odessa. He graduated from medical school and entered history in 1965. Faculty of Odessa University. Expelled in 1966 for collecting materials for the book “The Image of Russia”; the materials were confiscated during a search. From 1967 to 1974 reprinted and distributed samizdat. In August 1975, he applied to leave for Israel and was refused. In November 1976, he renounced Soviet citizenship by sending his passport to the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. In January 1980, he was arrested and sentenced to 1 year in prison under Art. 214 of the Criminal Code of the Ukrainian SSR. He was held in a general regime penal colony in the village. Tagancha, Konevsky district, Cherkasy region. Arrested again on April 21, 1983. On December 23, 1983, he was convicted by the Odessa Regional Court under Art. 187-1 of the Criminal Code of the Ukrainian SSR to 3 years of penal colony. He was held in pre-trial detention center No. 1 in the Odessa region, Kharkov prison and in penal colony No. 15 in the city of Perevalsk, Voroshilovgrad region. Released on April 19, 1986. After his release, he spent a year in a tuberculosis dispensary. In 1990, he received permission to leave the country.
