The author calls his memoirs a "documentary story", although they are closer in genre to a fictionalized story. The plot core is the story of an average family subjected to repression in 1931. The text is presented in only 1 chapter. The promised subsequent chapters on the life of the family and the story of the "terrible 1937" are missing.
The beginning of the memories is a description of individual paintings from childhood that seem happy to the author: work with the whole family in the field; a father meeting a girl in the winter after school with a sled; delicious Sunday pies baked by mother; skiing from an ice slide on ice rinks; church holidays, etc.
The unexpected arrival of "guests" in the author's house. The accusation of the father of sabotage and agitation against the Soviet regime. His refusal to sign on charges. Rumors that they began to take bread and cattle from people. Neighbor's advice to hide some of the bread for the children. Again the refusal of the father. His overnight arrest. Premature from the experiences of the birth of the mother. Breaking open a barn with a crowbar, loading all the grain onto carts, robbery destruction of a “wool churn”. Death of a younger brother from a cold.
The arrest of the mother with her baby, who were placed overnight in a cold pantry. "Trial" over the mother of five children in the school building in the presence of many fellow villagers. The accusation is agitation against Soviet power. The verdict (the trial was conducted by one judge, a woman) - "10 years of deportation to the Solovetsky camps." The outrage of the villagers. Preparing the mother for a long journey through the stage. A fellow villager assigned to spy on his mother and her house.
The sudden appearance of the father at night after a long absence. His story about what happened to him after his arrest: a freight car to Nizhny, checking documents at the station, questions from the inspector about the reason for the arrest, his decision to let his father go “on all four sides”, a trip to his sister, her participation in the fate of her brother, help from relatives in search of housing and work for the future when he moves with his family to their region. Someone else's suit, fashionable hat, cane - father's outfit, designed to deceive oncoming people. At night, the departure of the father, who agreed with the mother where she would come with the children.
Suspicion of the authorities that the owner came home at night. Search. The removal of all things from the house on a cart and selling them at auction to the villagers. The return by conscientious people of these things. Secret night departure of the whole family with the help of the mother's brother. Meeting with his father at his sister's house. Moving to a new place of residence with those relatives who volunteered to help the persecuted. Friendly life in the host family.
The memories end with a promise to continue them.
