Genus.   28.12.1943 in besieged Leningrad. Studied at the Department of Archeology of the History Department of Leningrad State University. Taught at the Department of Archeology. Studied the problems of Slavic-Russian archeology and the genesis of Russia. Since 1993, he headed the St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Research Institute of Cultural and Natural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Russian Academy of Sciences (since 1998 - the Center for Regional Studies and Museum Technologies "Petroscandica" of the Research Institute of Cultural and Historical Heritage of St. Petersburg State University). In the early 1990s - deputy of the Leningrad City Council, member of the Presidium and the first chairman of the Standing Commission on Culture and Cultural-Historical Heritage. One of the founders and active participants of the Memorial society. He is buried in the cemetery in the village of Staraya Ladoga.
