Born in 1884 in the city of Nikolaevsk (now the city of Pugachev) in the Samara province. In 1905 he graduated from high school, entered the physics and mathematics department of St. Petersburg University. In 1911 he graduated from the drama courses of the St. Petersburg Theater School (class of A. I. Dolinov), and was enrolled in the St. Petersburg drama troupe. One of the leading actors of the Alexandrinsky Theater in the 1920s and 1930s (1917-1923; 1926-1940). He was an artist at the Meyerhold Theater. He taught at the Leningrad Theater Studio. During the Great Patriotic War he lived in Leningrad (Fontanka Embankment, 64, apt. 2), playing in performances of the "Blockade Theater" created in the city (later - the V. F. Komissarzhevskaya Theater). 15.06.1943 awarded the medal "For the Defense of Leningrad". 19.07.1943 arrested. Sentenced by a military tribunal under Article 58 to 10 years in a labor camp. Imprisoned in Volgolag (Rybinsk). In 1944, due to exhaustion, he was "acted out" and sent to Bezhetsk. Worked in theaters in Kirov, Omsk, Tyumen (1951-1953). In the summer of 1953 he returned to Leningrad. He died in 1964 in the Leningrad House of Stage Veterans.
