The author, who was born in 1924 in the ancient village of Berezan in Ukraine, talks about his life and the lives of his relatives before his deportation to Germany: about the murder of his grandfather by the Germans in 1918 because he did not give wheat to their horses, about the ordeals of parents during collectivization, about the efforts of a father and mother to save their children from starvation, about how, as a teenager, he grazed the personal cattle of fellow villagers, how he drove cattle at the beginning of the war to the rear, how trenches were dug in the Chernihiv region, about the retreat of Soviet troops and civilians through the Berezan, about the arrival of the Germans in the village, about 20 local residents who went to serve as policemen, about how these people behaved differently towards their fellow villagers (Okhrimenko Tikhon, the head of police, defended fellow villagers more than once), about the execution of soldiers hiding from the Germans in this village, about the murder of a neighbor’s father, who reproached him for looting (a lot of corpses remained along the road during the retreat), about what work the author had to do under the Germans, about various episodes that happened to him at that time and almost cost him his life.
