Born in 1876 in St. Petersburg, in the family of a literary ethnographer; Russian; Higher education: graduated from the Naval School, Naval Cadet Corps, and Naval Academy. Since 1898 - assistant to the head of the Hydrological Expedition of the Eastern Ocean. In 1905–1914 he carried out hydrographic work in the Baltic Sea and off the Murmansk coast as the head of a party, and then the head of an expedition. During the First World War - head of the geodetic department of the Main Hydrographic Directorate. In Soviet times, he trained hydrographers for the Navy, and was the director of hydrography and navigation in the Directorate for Ensuring the Safety of Navigation in the Baltic Sea. After organizing the Main Directorate of the Northern Sea Route, he trained polar hydrographers at the courses he organized, advised on hydrographic and geodetic work in Altai and Karelia, and on the construction of the White Sea-Baltic Canal. Arrested 03/27/1938; By resolution of the NKVD LO on April 26, 1939, he was released due to lack of proof of the charge. After the war, he headed the department of hydrography at VAMU. He died in Leningrad and was buried at Bolsheokhtinskoye Cemetery.
