Genus. in 1923 near Kostroma in a peasant family. In August 1942 he went to the front and received awards. He ended the Great Patriotic War as a supply officer. After the war, he became an entruster under General Ivan Serov, Deputy Chief of the Soviet Military Administration in Germany for Civil Administration Affairs and concurrently Deputy People's Commissar of the NKVD of the USSR. In 1947 he graduated from the Military Academy of Logistics and Supply. After this, under the patronage of Serov, he entered the Military Diplomatic Academy, from which he graduated in 1951. In the same year, he was assigned to Vienna, to the contingent of Soviet troops in Austria. The main task was to recruit agents from among Austrian citizens to work against Yugoslavia. Since 1954, he began actively collaborating with the CIA as an agent under the pseudonym “Gracespace.” He betrayed all the agents known to him in Austria, as well as the personnel training system for the KGB of the USSR and the GRU and the organizational and staffing structure of these departments.
When the USSR withdrew its troops from Austria in 1955, Popov returned to Moscow. After some time, he received an appointment in the GDR, in the city of Schwerin. 10.01. 1956 again came into contact with US intelligence agencies. In April 1957, he was transferred to Karlshorst, where he began working with illegal intelligence officers of the USSR in other countries, while continuing to cooperate with American intelligence. In November 1958 he was recalled to Moscow. 02/18/1959 arrested at the Leningradsky station in Moscow. On January 07, 1960, by the Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR, he was sentenced to military service.
