From 1889 - Bishop of Cyrene, from 1893 - Bishop of Tobolsk and Siberia, from 1897 - Bishop of Riga and Mitau. In 1904 he was elevated to the rank of archbishop. From 1910 - Archbishop of Lithuania and Vilna, from 1913 - Archbishop of Yaroslavl and Rostov. In 1917 he was elevated to the rank of metropolitan. In 1922, he distributed a message from Patriarch Tikhon in the diocese in connection with the decision of the Council. authorities on the separation of church and state, in connection with which he was accused of anti-Soviet activities. On November 25, 1922, by resolution of the NKVD commission, he was exiled to the Narym region for 3 years. He died on October 16, 1928 in Yaroslavl. Rehabilitated in 1993
