Genus. in 1892 in the city of Kamyshlov, Perm province, in the family of a teacher; Russian; graduated from the art school of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts in 1917 and the Faculty of History and Philology of Petrograd University in 1918, in 1918–1922 he studied at the Academy of Arts in the studio of K.S. Petrov-Vodkin; b/p. After graduating from the Academy of Arts, he worked as a teacher of drawing at the preparatory department, in 1925 he was elected a member of the board of the Academy of Arts, and in 1926–1929 - deputy vice-rector of the Academy of Arts, teacher of painting and drawing. He was a member of Smotrytsky’s religious and philosophical circle “Cultural Corner”. In 1929 he lived in Leningrad; arrested in the Resurrection case; sentenced by the OSO KOGPU on July 22, 1929 to deportation to the Northern Territory for 3 years; In exile, he worked for the Arkhangelsk newspaper Pravda Severa. After a review of the case in August 1932, he was released early and returned to Leningrad. Until 1934 he worked at the Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1934–1937 - dean of the painting faculty of the Academy of Arts, from 1948 he headed the graphics section at the Academy of Arts, in 1954 he was confirmed with the rank of professor, since 1958 he was retired; died in Leningrad in 1959.
