He graduated from high school in Riga. 1961 entered the Faculty of History and Philology of the University of Latvia. In the same year he was called up for compulsory military service and only in 1964 was he able to begin his studies. In 1969 he received a university diploma. He worked in the city economy as a driver of the Druzhba chainsaw and a lawn mower of the same name, and as an evening school teacher. in 1991-2006 - department editor, then co-editor of the magazine “Daugava”.
