Born in 1863 in the Vologda province, into a peasant family; Russian; no name. From 1882 he lived in St. Petersburg. Bibliophile, bibliographer and publisher, collector of paintings, 1st guild merchant, banker, hereditary Honorary Citizen, philanthropist. Lived in Leningrad (Nadezhdinskaya St., bldg. 30/32, apt. 12; until 1917 he was the owner of this house). In the late 1920s he worked as an employee of the library of the A.I. Herzen Pedagogical Institute. In 1935, he lived dependent on his son, Konstantin Alexandrovich. Arrested in Leningrad as a member of the SOE family; sentenced by the decree of the OS NKVD USSR dated March 22, 1935 to exile to the city of Astrakhan for 5 years. While in exile in Astrakhan, he was arrested on charges of having connections with Finnish intelligence and the Finnish consulate in Leningrad. He was sentenced to capital punishment by the Post. Tretyakov Gallery of the Stalingrad Region NKVD on 1 October 1938. He was executed on 29 October 1938. He was rehabilitated in the 1935 case by the Leningrad prosecutor's office on 30 August 1989, and in the 1938 case in 1963.
