Genus. 03/05/1875 in Taganrog; higher education - graduated from the St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy in 1899. In 1902 he defended his doctoral dissertation. In 1905-1907 worked abroad, including in the laboratory of I.I. Mechnikov at the Pasteur Institute (Paris). In 1907-1921 – Head of the laboratory of the Naval Hospital in Kronstadt. Since 1908 - private assistant professor, since March 1917 - professor, head of the department of bacteriology at the Imperial Clinical Institute of Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna. In 1929 he was elected a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1936, he became dean of the Sanitary and Hygienic Faculty of the Leningrad State Institute for Advanced Medical Training (LenGIDUV). Arrested on August 14, 1938, on charges of participating in a counter-revolutionary sabotage and terrorist organization of microbiologists (Article 58, paragraphs 8, 9, 11 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR). By a resolution of the military prosecutor of the Main Military Prosecutor's Office of Moscow dated November 19, 1939, the case was terminated and he was released. Reinstated as professor of LenGIDUV.
