After graduating from the St. Petersburg Technological Institute in 1902, he worked at the Putilov plant until 1916, where he created a metallographic laboratory (1904). From 1909 he taught at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute, and from 1919 he was a professor at the Moscow Mining Academy. He supervised the construction of Russia's first electric steel plant, Elektrostal (Moscow region), which was launched at the end of 1917. One of the creators of the domestic production of alloy steels.
