On October 16, 1994, she was arrested on charges of possession and distribution of drugs. After a year spent in Butyrka, she was released under the guarantee of the Russian Pen Club. Refused political asylum in Sweden. In 1997, she was arrested again and spent another six months in prison. The process was actively covered by the Russian media, as well as in the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Sweden and Finland. In total (including the appeal) the process lasted five years. In April 1998, she was sentenced to one and a half years (her time in pre-trial detention was counted towards her term). Public defenders at the trial were Andrei Voznesensky, Andrei Bitov, Alexander Tkachenko, Yunna Morits, Lev Timofeev.
