Lived in Ufa. He graduated from the Faculty of Engineering and Economics of the Moscow Petroleum Institute and worked as an engineer. Since 1961, he has been engaged in literary work, translating 7 books by Georgian poets. At the same time, he actively participated in the life of unofficial art, collecting a collection of modern paintings.He participated in the organization of the famous “Bulldozer Exhibition” (1974), after its dispersal, in February 1975, he was expelled abroad. He went to France, where he was able to take only a small part (80 out of 500 paintings) of his collection; the rest were then transported by the artists through diplomatic channels.
In 1976, in Montgeron near Paris, he founded the Museum of Contemporary Russian Art in Exile (later, along with a collection of works, he moved to New Jersey, USA).
He was actively involved in exhibition and publishing activities. He founded the publishing house "Third Wave", which published an almanac of the same name (19 issues in 1976-1986) and the magazine "Sagittarius" (since 1984). Together with S. Petrunis, he compiled the anthology “Russian Poets in the West” (1986). Author of several memoirs and journalistic books about contemporary Russian art.
Since 1994 he has published and performed in Russia; partially moved the work of the Third Wave publishing house to Moscow, releasing books by Joseph Brodsky, Heinrich Sapgir, Igor Kholin, Vladimir Uflyand, Valeria Narbikova, Viktor Erofeev, Evgeny Rein, Anatoly Kudryavitsky, Sergei Yurienen, Asya Shneiderman and other authors.
