031: Petrov. Petrov, Aleksey Pavlovich (1897-1942). Prisoner's personal file
Alexey Pavlovich Petrov was born in 1897 in Pyatigorsk. He was a Russian, a working-class citizen of the USSR, married, and lived in Rostov-on-Don where he worked as a mechanical engineer and associate professor at the Industrial Institute.
Arrested on September 30, 1941 by the Special Purpose Department of the NKVD Directorate for the Rostov Region. Charged under Article 58-10, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR. On July 18, 1942, he was transferred to Prison No. 3 of the Novosibirsk Region NKVD Directorate (Tomsk) and sent to the prison hospital for inpatient treatment with a diagnosis of decompression heart disease and vitamin deficiency.
The defendant, Aleksey Pavlovich Petrov, died in the Tomsk prison hospital on August 10, 1942. The report of the external examination of the body, signed by the prison warden and the prison doctor, stated that the prisoner's death was "natural and resulted from pellagra and pulmonary tuberculosis."
There is no photograph of the prisoner in the file, but there is a verbal portrait in the questionnaire: tall, thin, with light brown hair and grey eyes, a low forehead, arched eyebrows, a small mouth with thin lips and a dimple on the chin.

The file was discovered by chance in the damp basement of Pretrial Detention Center No. 1, some 80 years after its establishment. It is in poor condition, its pages eaten away by fungus and falling apart. Museum staff attempted to dry the documents and make copies.

Born in 1897 in Pyatigorsk, Russian, from a working class background, citizen of the USSR, no marriage certificate, married. Lived in Rostov-on-Don, mechanical engineer, associate professor at the Industrial Institute. Arrested on September 30, 1941 by the SPO UNKVD for the Rostov Region. Charged under Article 58-10, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of the RSFSR. On July 18, 1942, he was transferred to Prison No. 3 of the NKVD NSO (Tomsk) and sent to the prison hospital for inpatient treatment with a diagnosis of "decompression heart disease, vitamin deficiency."

Based on order No. 0457 and the order of the Head of Prison No. 3, State Security Lieutenant Comrade Bozhok, I, military doctor of the 2nd rank Kovunovsky(?) I. M.(?), in the presence of the DPNT Sergeant of the State Security Comrade Krylenkov(?), carried out an external examination of the body of prisoner Aleksey Pavlovich Petrov, born in 1897, who died in the hospital of Prison No. 3 on 10/VII 1942 at 13:00.
The body is male, of medium height, weak(?) build, and emaciated. Rigor mortis has set in. The mouth is closed, the tongue is clenched. The chest is cylindrical, with protruding ribs. The abdomen is sunken, with pale skin. The nasal, ear, and rectal openings are free of foreign objects.
Upper and lower limbs are without damage.
[inaudible] no changes were found during external examination of the body.
Based on [inaudible] and case history No. 1148-53, the death of prisoner A.P. Petrov was natural and resulted from pellagra and pulmonary tuberculosis.
