Born in 1869 in the Novokhopersk district of the Tambov province, into a rural priest's family, she graduated from high school in Borisoglebsk. She became involved with a circle of revolutionary-minded youth. A Social Democrat, she hid banned literature and helped young revolutionaries go into hiding. She married a law student who later became an attorney and moved to Tambov with her husband. She was the mother of three daughters. From 1929, after the first arrest of her middle daughter, Tatyana, and then her husband, she raised her granddaughter. In 1930, she moved to Moscow.
