(1881–08/25/1936) - revolutionary and political figure. From the peasants of the Ryazan province. Party member since 1899. He carried out illegal party work in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vyshny Volochyok, Rostov, Kharkov, Krasnoyarsk, for which he was arrested 7 times, spent 6 years in prison, was exiled to the Vologda province and Narym. In the spring and summer of 1917, he was one of the organizers and leaders of the Council of Soldiers' Deputies of the Tomsk Garrison. During the Civil War, he was a member of the Revolutionary Military Councils of the Republic, the Eastern Front and the 5th Army. As a member of the Siberian Bureau of the Central Committee of the RCP(b), he led the Bolshevik underground in Siberia. He is considered one of those responsible for the extrajudicial execution of Admiral Kolchak. At the VIII Congress of the RCP(b) he was elected a candidate member of the Central Committee, and at the IX Congress - a member of the party's Central Committee. Later he was in leading party, Soviet and economic work. In 1923–1927 People's Commissar of Posts and Telegraphs. Since 1923, he belonged to the left opposition in the RCP (b), and was one of its leaders. In December 1927, he was expelled from the CPSU(b). After being reinstated in the party in 1929–1932. manager of the Saratovkombaynstroy trust, since 1932 head of the Department of New Buildings of the NKTP USSR. I. N. Smirnov, sentenced to 5 years in prison, did not write any more statements of repentance and was in the Suzdal special prison until in August 1936 he was brought to the First Moscow trial in the case of the so-called “anti-Soviet united Trotskyist-Zinoviev center” . On August 24, 1936, the military collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR, along with other defendants, sentenced him to capital punishment and executed the next day. They say that, going to be shot, I. N. Smirnov said: “We deserved this by our behavior at the trial.” Rehabilitated on July 13, 1988.
