Matveev Mikhail Rodionovich
In 1933, he was promoted to the position of deputy head of the Administrative and Economic Administration of the OGPU Plenipotentiary Representative Office for the Leningrad Military District, and since 1934 - deputy head of the administrative and economic department (AHU) of the NKVD for the Leningrad Region.
In October-November 1937, being appointed head of the brigade for carrying out sentences at the White Sea Baltic Combine (BBK) in Sandormokh, he personally shot most of the convicts with a shot in the back of the head, in a number of cases he was assisted by the assistant commandant of the NKVD G.L. Alafer[2]. In this way, 200-250 people were killed per day. On November 10, 1937, he transferred the leadership of the execution brigade to the head of the 5th department of the 3rd department of the NKVD BBK I.A. Bondarenko and the deputy chief A.F. Shondysh.
By order of the UNKVD LO on December 20, 1937, state security captain M.R. Matveev and state security junior lieutenant G.L. Alafer were awarded valuable gifts for “dedicated work in the fight against counter-revolution.”
In 1939, he was sentenced to 10 years in a labor camp for “exceeding official authority.” During interrogations, he testified that he and G.L. Alafer were directly involved in the executions, while the other members of the brigade Gintsov, Larioshin, Vasilyev, Derevyanko, Kuznetsov and Tverdokhleb acted as guards and prepared the convicts for execution, the driver Voskresensky delivered them to the place of execution of the sentence , driver Fedotov and NKVD officer Ershov were involved in the economic support of the operation and checked the Belbaltkombinat prisoners against the execution list.
He served his sentence in Rybinsk. Released early at the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, he continued to work in state security agencies as head of the internal prison of the Leningrad UNKVD-UNKGB-UMGB. Retired in December 1949.
