Member of the Komsomol. 12/18/1981 together with colleague Melnikov A.G. deserted from his unit and captured 25 students from Sarapul School No. 12, demanding that they issue foreign passports and exit visas and send them by plane to the USA or any other capitalist country, threatening otherwise to shoot the hostages. After negotiations and the release of the hostages, he was neutralized by members of the Alpha special forces unit without the use of weapons. Sentenced to 13 years*. There is evidence that after his release, Kolpakbaev was spotted near the American embassy in Moscow.
