Russian-American chemist, academician of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1916) (later the Russian Academy of Sciences and the USSR Academy of Sciences).
Genus. in 1867. Education: 3rd Moscow Cadet Corps, 3rd Alexander Military School (1885), Mikhailovsky Artillery School (1887), Mikhailovsky Artillery Academy (1892). Staff captain (07/26/1892). Tutor Mikhailovskaya art. academy and school (from 08/06/1892), full-time military teacher at the Mikhailovsky art. academies and schools (06/10/1895-11/27/1899). He taught and worked in the chemical laboratory of the academy. In 1896-1897 On a scientific trip, he worked in foreign chemical laboratories in Munich and Paris. Honored Professor (from 06/09/1912) of the Mikhailovsky Artillery Academy. Ordinary academician of the Imperial Academy of Sciences (1916-1936). Lieutenant General. In 1918-1927 worked at the USSR Academy of Sciences and at the High Pressure Chemical Research Institute, which he founded (since 1927). In June 1930 he went to the International Energy Congress in Berlin and did not return to the USSR. From 1930 he worked in the USA as a professor at Northwestern University (Chicago). Until 1936, he regularly sent the results of his work carried out in the USA to the USSR, but he rejected all offers to return. On 12/29/1936 he was deprived of the title of academician, and on 01/05/1937 he was stripped of his Soviet citizenship. Recognized as "Person of the Year" in the USA (1937). Member of the US National Academy (1939). He died in Chicago in 1952. On December 29, 1990, he was posthumously reinstated to the rank of academician.
