Genus. March 23, 1931 in Leningrad. Soviet, later - Swiss chess player, grandmaster (1956). Four-time champion of the USSR (1960, 1962, 1964, 1970), three-time champion of Leningrad (1955, 1957, 1964). Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (1960; filmed in 1976). He refused to return to the USSR from the tournament in Amsterdam (1976), settled in Switzerland, where he received political asylum, and later citizenship (1994). The K. family was denied permission to leave the USSR (they applied to leave for Israel). On this occasion, according to the notes of the KGB (No. 1167-A dated 12.06.78 and No. 2093-A dated 10.30.78.), a special resolution was issued by the Secretariat of the Central Committee of the CPSU “On the undesirability of the family of the defector Korchnoy V.L. and antisocial actions of his family members. His son Igor was arrested and sentenced to two and a half years in prison for draft evasion. In 1990, K. was rehabilitated and restored to citizenship of the USSR, but refused to return to the country.
