During the German occupation in 1944, he was arrested by the security forces (Gestapo and SD) and during the investigation was kept in the Central Prison in Tallinn, but after a few months he was released and continued his studies at the university. In 1946 he was again arrested, this time by the Soviet authorities (NKVD) and was exiled to Siberia and the Arctic, was in the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Komi Republic. In 1954 he returned from exile and took up his professional activities.
