Born: June 3, 1937, Vinnitsa, UkraineIn 1961 he graduated from the editing department of the Ukrainian Printing Institute.
From 1962 to 1972 - screenwriter at the Kyiv film studio of popular science films.
Since 1964 - member of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR, laureate of the Lomonosov Prize (film "Portrait of a Surgeon"). Released in 1967, A Brief History of Soviet Cinema mentioned three of his works: Portrait of a Surgeon, Man and Bread, and The Wizard of the Green World.
In 1971, he completed the two-year Higher Directing Courses at the State Committee for Cinema in Moscow and received a director's diploma. In 1972 he emigrated from the USSR.
In 1974-1980 was a freelance writer for a weekly agricultural program on Radio Liberty, from which he left for reasons quite truthfully set out in the book “Yellow Kings.”
